[He had ignored the pinging of the first two messages after first glancing at the time of night and then checking that it wasn't Zagreus trying to get hold of him.
The third time, the call is far more obnoxious. Thanatos mutters something against his pillow and reaches for the device with a sigh.]
Why would I want to talk to anyone else, Thanatos? To think that I'd even dream of picking someone over my favorite brother.
[ But, he's going to get to it. ]
I was curious, and I never asked, but what types of magic can you do here. I've already sorted out mine. Not fully figured out what I can do with them, but I know what they are.
[ This could absolutely wait, but he didn't actually have a reason for bothering him other than for the sake of it. ]
[Favourite brother indeed. Hypnos is only lucky that Thanatos likes him far more than he ever admits to. The question feels like an excuse to continue talking, but admittedly they hadn't discussed this yet...]
Kinetic, and death magic. [He replies with a sigh.] Evidently there are forces at work here that have a sense of humour.
It's almost like the forces here know you, Thanatos. It's pretty delightful that this is the magic you get. It suits you.
[ Not just because of the death thing, either. ]
I can do Cognitive and Kinetic. Not the same, but some similar features I've heard. It is like this place k knows us and gives us magic we're going to be able to master, though.
[ He really didn't call for this, either, but he can't get to sleep. And he's going to blame the weird mortal body right now. ]
Mortal bodies are so demanding. I'm not used to having to feel comfortable to sleep.
[They've been fairly lucky then, he thinks. He's seen people here who are sorely challenged by the magic they have been given - that policeman, for instance, who was so afraid of the dead that he needed company just to be around them. What wisdom was there in giving Death magic to someone like that?
But something else that Hypnos says catches Thanatos' attention before he can really think too much about that.]
You can't sleep?
[Is that why he's waking Thanatos up at this time of night?]
[ Thanatos is going to hear a knock on his door not that long after he replies because Hypnos makes his way there right away. He's in fully ready to sleep dress, like usual. An eye mask propped up on his forehead. ]
Thanatos immediately grabs his twin by the front of his clothes and yanks him through the door before swiftly closing it behind him. He frowns as he turns around (also dressed for bed, only wearing a pair of loose pants) and shakes his head as if in disbelief.]
I know there's something wrong with you if you need any help to sleep.
[ What, you're not going to make him stand outside to further humiliate you, Thanatos? Still, he's happy to see his brother and steps through with him, nudged forward with the tug. ]
I'm not adjusting to mortality well. Human bodies are awkward and get sore and tired, but you don't get tired.
You don't have to stay up now for my sake. I'm sure I'll simply sleep better in my dear brother's company.
[A taciturn response, to be sure, but Hypnos isn't the only one here who is having difficulty adjusting to mortal life. There are all kinds of things that a mortal body needs to make sure it doesn't simply stop working.
He sighs softly, giving another slightly smaller shake of his head.]
I'm sure. You can take the bed. I'll be fine on the floor.
[ This is on the top of his list of things he never thought he'd say. Still, he makes his move towards the side of the bed. And then, he taps the space next to him. Did you think it was going to be that simple, buddy? ]
[He bristles slightly, but being quite used to his brother does not respond verbally. Instead, he just stares for a moment at the spot Hypnos pats beside him and then narrows his eyes.]
You're not serious.
[Of course he's serious, and Thanatos knows he won't be getting any more rest if he doesn't comply. So, naturally, he does as bidden and joins his twin on the bed.]
[ Well, that's something. Thanatos is doing this despite protesting it. Hypnos had hoped he would, but he's never certain with Thanatos, so his expectations always start pretty low with what his brother is willing to do. ]
It'd still be nice to spend some time with you, even if we're asleep part of it.
[ Since you won't just murder large chunks of people so he can enjoy your company. Watch your nuisance of a brother inch in closer. And closer. ]
What does being children have to do with spending time with my twin brother?
[Awful, terrible gremlin brat of a brother. Thanatos settles his shoulders back against the bed and shuts his eyes, ignoring the very obvious way that Hypnos is inching in closer to him. It's not as if there was a lot of room between them to begin with.]
And don't expect to make a habit of this.
[He's braced for his brother just latching on to him, seeing it coming a mile off and doing precisely nothing to stop it.]
[ Alright, well, since his brother seems to have resigned to his fate (as he should), Hypnos shifts up next to him, and tucks up against him. he drapes one arm over his brother, and seems quite relaxed almost immediately. Amazing what cuddling up to your reluctant and stubborn twin brother does. He's comfortable. ]
[He doesn't sound very much like he means it. It sounds more like idle grumbling, really, as he curls his arm around Hypnos' shoulders and rests one hand against the back of his head.
Then he quiets for a while, his fingers occasionally twitching in Hypnos' silvery curls, before he speaks again.]
You might have told me sooner if you were struggling.
[ Yawn. He won't delay and he'll cuddle right up to Thanatos right away, right? Yeah. He will. But it's been so long. He can't even remember how long, really - since Thanatos has put a hand on him. Since he's touched his head, since the touch was so soft.
There's a lot of times when he doubts that Thanatos cares about him or loves him. Often - most of the time - even. But right now? Those doubts are gone and he feels like his brother does truly care about him.
Then, he adds quietly: ]
I may just tell you so we can do this like we are kids again.
[Thanatos chuffs out a very quiet laugh, the sound barely snatching enough air to be audible. His hand is still gentle on the back of Hypnos' head, and he can't remember the last time that they were voluntarily this close to one another either.
He's always so busy. So busy with everything, and Hypnos has always been the antithesis to everything he tried to stand for. Irritatingly lazy, unmotivated, constantly falling asleep at his post. His absolute opposite.
At least, so he often thinks. They are twins after all.
And he does care.]
We haven't been children for a long time, little brother.
[ He's teasing, of course. It's his nature to tease, even more so when he's comfortable with someone like he is with Thanatos right now. It's nice to feel comfortable with him. They may be brothers - twins - but that's where their similarities end and he has always had issues connecting with him. So here he'll sleep, one arm draped over him. It's as if he were a pet cat.
And though he has always had doubts. He know one thing:
If Thanatos didn't want him here, he wouldn't be here right now. ]
[In that, at least, Hypnos is entirely correct. Thanatos has borne his brother's intrusion and antics with gritted teeth, but he has borne them. It would have been easy to refuse his company, to turn him away, or to tell him to leave. Thanatos has never been shy of speaking his mind about things like that.
Maybe it's this place. With the reality of mortality shoved so abruptly in his face and it being his own, there has been something of a shift in the god of death's priorities.]
You know... [And he turns his head slightly so Hypnos' curls brush his cheek.] You don't need to make an excuse to spend time with me here. Just ask me.

What do you want, Hypnos.
no subject
[ Nothing, he wanted nothing but to bother you, Than. ]
Woah! Okay, that's a new one.
no subject
[Look, the needing to sleep is irritating enough as it is without the God of Sleep needling at it.]
Is there something you want, or are you just bored.
no subject
[ And he's still disrupting it. ]
Mostly just bored. Woke up and wanted to talk to you.
no subject
[Zagreus? Medea? Literally anyone except him.
And yet, he doesn't hang up on his brother. He sighs in an undeniably very disgruntled manner and sits up to wake himself up a little more.]
All right. You have my full and undivided attention. Use it wisely.

He huffs out a soft breath.]
Very well.
